California Soul, Oaxaca Heart.
Everything as it was
Julie and Matt’s morning unfolded in a sun-drenched Airbnb at the heart of Oaxaca. There was a beautiful ease in having everyone present in the same space, letting the day begin with a shared sense of anticipation.
It was a time for quiet, honest moments—punctuated by local beers, snacks, and the inevitable crunch of chapulines. This wasn't about following a rigid schedule, but about a sincere prelude to the day where family and friends moved freely around them, creating an atmosphere that was as simple as it was profound.
Cruz de Piedra and Something Blue
We spent some time wandering through the streets around Cruz de Piedra under a relentless midday sun. I’ve always loved that kind of light; it’s raw, unapologetic, and completely real. Julie looked incredible in her blue dress, a refreshing break from tradition as we explored different corners of the neighborhood.
Toward the end of our walk, just as we decided to stop for a popsicle, the city decided to give us a gift. Dark, threatening clouds rolled in, but instead of a downpour, a rainbow appeared in the background at the exact moment a classic "Vocho" rattled past. It was one of those fleeting, unscripted frames that you simply can’t plan for. After that brief break with Paletería Nachito—a true city icon—we hopped into a final taxi and headed straight to the ceremony at Asador Bacanora.
The Intimate Ceremony at Asador Bacanora
Arriving at Asador Bacanora, the Oaxaca sun was at its peak, washing the courtyard in a brilliant, warm glow. Before the formal exchange of vows, there was a beautiful cocktail hour—just the couple drifting through groups of family and friends, sharing drinks and stories without the pressure of a schedule.
The ceremony unfolded against the striking orange walls of the patio. It wasn’t about a rehearsed performance; it was about the genuine emotion and the unscripted moments that naturally occur when people are truly present. Witnessing the guests—their tears and their shared joy—was a reminder of why I document weddings this way. It’s about capturing the authentic energy of people gathering in the heart of Mexico.
A Jalatlaco Calenda: Celebrating Tradition in Oaxaca
The celebration spilled out into the streets of Jalatlaco as the Calenda began. Since the venue is tucked into this historic neighborhood, we spent the afternoon winding through the cobblestone streets before circling back. The sky was overcast, providing that beautiful, soft light that I personally love—it keeps the focus entirely on the vibrant colors and raw energy of the parade without the distraction of harsh shadows.
For many of the guests, this wasn't just their first time in Oaxaca, but their first experience in Mexico. Seeing them witness the towering marmotas and the brass band under those moody, grey skies was incredible. You could feel the impact of the deep-rooted traditions on everyone there. The vibe was electric; an unscripted, high-energy celebration that turned the wedding into a true communal experience in the heart of one of the city's most iconic barrios.
Dinner and Party at Asador Bacanora, Oaxaca
Returning from the vibrant energy of the streets, the atmosphere at Asador Bacanora shifted into something more intimate and grounded. A brief secondary cocktail hour gave everyone a moment to catch their breath before settling in for dinner under the Oaxaca night sky.
The speeches were as raw and honest as the day itself—no scripts, just genuine words shared between family and friends. When the first dance began, the courtyard’s orange walls were illuminated by a different kind of glow, leading straight into a party that didn't let up. Documenting that transition—from the quiet, emotional toasts to the uninhibited joy on the dance floor—is where the story truly completes itself. It was the perfect end to a day defined by both deep-rooted tradition and personal connection.
